'Frozen' summary
In the Kingdom of Arendelle, Princess Elsa has the power of freezing and creating ice and snow, and her younger sister Anna loves to play with her. When Elsa accidentally hits Anna on the head with her gift and almost kills her, their parents bring them to trolls that save Anna's life and make her forget the ability of her sister. Elsa returns to the castle and maintain herself recluse in her room with fear of hurting Anna with her increasing power. Their parents die when their ship sinks in the ocean and three years later, the coronation of Elsa forces her to open the gates of her castle to celebrate with the people. Anna meets Prince Hans in the party and she immediately falls in love with him and decides to marry him. But Elsa does not accept the marriage and loses control of her powers freezing Arendelle. Elsa flees to the mountain and Anna teams up with the peasant Kristoff and his reindeer Sven and with the snowman Olaf to seek out Elsa. They find Elsa in her icy castle and she accidentally hits Anna in the heart; now only true love can save her sister from death." ( Claudio Carvalho, 2014). "Hans has found Elsa wandering the ice of the fjord. Thinking he's come for her, Elsa tells him to leave her alone, and take care of Anna. Hans lies and says that Anna was killed by Elsa's magic. The pain of this causes Elsa to collapse, the snow in the air suddenly hanging in stillness. The clearing of the whiteout enables Kristoff to see Anna, and he runs to her, but as Anna looks around, she sees Hans about to stab Elsa. Even with her own life at stake, Anna rushes in front of Hans, blocking the knife. As she does so, her frozen heart finally consumes her, turning her into a statue of ice, and shattering Hans' blade. Kristoff and Sven arrive seconds later. Seeing Anna turned to ice, Elsa breaks down in tears, hugging her sister. No one is sure what to say, when Anna's icy form begins to change and gain color, and she returns to normal! Anna broke her own spell: saving Elsa was an act of true love. It is then that Elsa realizes what can end the winter: love. And with this realization, she dissipates the ice and snow, and summer returns to the kingdom. Olaf is found, and before he can melt, Elsa creates a perpetual snow flurry above his head, which lets him survive the summer heat." ( dmcreif, 2015)." |

musical style popular at the time
"The music of the 2000's showcased a variety of genres and it reflected a great deal of the pop music that came from the nineties, with many of the same artists and bands remaining popular between the two decades. For a decade filled with much suffering in terms of the September 11th attacks, two wars in the Middle East, and an economic downturn, a lot of the music had to strike a fine balance between upbeat and optimistic while still reflecting the pain that many experienced. Some of the more popular genres of the decade included Dance-Pop, Indie Rock, and Emo."(unknown, 2004)

Was the music style popular present?
Based off of the three songs I investigated the music style that was popular then is not present in the songs played throughout the movie. Although there is an increase in the variety of the types of instruments used. Throughout this movie there is a more overall Broadway style incorporated into the actual songs.
role of the music
The voices
Broadway stars are not typically known for their modesty: it takes a certain amount of self-belief to stand on stage, eight times a week, and hold an audience. And Idina Menzel has been doing that for two decades, ever since she got her break in the original production of Rent, through her award-winning, career-making role in Wicked, and now inIf/Then, a year-long run of a show that was written for her. |
There are multiple articles where Idina Menzel answers questions about the song she sang and about her opinions on the song. Most of this was made as a promotion for the movie. As the singer answers more questions and also talks more about the movie on different mediums, it helps people here about the movie title, thus making them want to take a look and also ultimately wanting to watch the movie. Also this singer is very well known for her contributions on Broadway and other films as an actress. By incorporating a well-known figure to play a role, this makes a new audience curious to see what work she has done next. By widening the audience who are exposed to the singer it helped raise the popularity.
Role of womenOften in Disney films, princesses are portrayed as woman or girls who need the help of a prince in order to achieve her ultimate goal which is to live happily ever after. What split frozen apart from many previous Disney movies is that there are 2 females lead roles and the story do not end in the classic happily ever after routine thanks to a man. This can be seen in the song let it go.
Unfinished. (n.d.). Retrieved February 5, 2015, from http://marklovefurniture.com/blog/2014/07/02/can-we-please-stop-telling-each-other-to-let-it-go/
In the song let it go Elsa is talking about how she can now be herself and be individual. She let go of her problems and is becoming stronger as a person on her own. Now instead of having songs that talk about how their prince will help them live happily ever after Disney is taking a turn and instead trying to empower people by sending them the message, it s possible to make yourself happy and you don't need help from people to do so. It is stepping away from the traditional Disney way of thinking due to many if the controversy's on women's roles in society and empowering women. |
